July, 2022. Centre Scientifique of Monaco

Mark Kaufman Charitable Foundation launches a new project together with the Centre Scientifique of Monaco, financing the innovative CRISPR technology aimed at coral preservation in future.

Coral reefs, iconic rainforests of the seas, are ecosystems essential to the balance of our planet.

However, the 1,600 coral species that make up the reefs are threatened by global climate change combined with local environmental pressures. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, these habitats could even disappear by 2100, leading to the extinction of many marine species.

CRISPR/Cas9 technology, for which the two pioneers, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2020, enables the targeted modification of genes and offers innovative and promising possibilities.

The project proposed here aims to use CRISPR/Cas9 in an adult coral, making it possible for the first time to determine the genes responsible for coral resistance to increasing ocean temperatures. Gene screening in different coral species will then allow the resistant species to be selected and introduced to damaged reefs to improve long-term coral resistance and survival.

This bold project draws on the expertise of CSM teams at the interface of marine and medical biology, providing an unprecedented opportunity to develop this exciting new technology. This will represent a major advance in the study and protection of coral reefs and thus marine ecosystems. On an even wider scale, it will also allow us to improve our knowledge of the CRISPR/Cas9 technique and thus make progress in the application of this approach in the fight against cancer.

Mark Kaufman Charitable Foundation donated Euro 43,000.
